Measuring Windows and Vents For Diamond Hurricane Screens

The most critical step in the measuring process is determining the initial position of the 4 corner anchors.  Correctly positioned anchors are essential to ensuring the screen can withstand hurricane force winds.

Follow the procedures below for each window or vent requiring hurricane screens, and enter the appropriate information in the measuring worksheet.

  • Enter the location of the window or vent in the measuring worksheet.

  • Select the screen color.

  • Select the construction type of the building (wood frame, concrete, hollow concrete block).

  • Locate the 4 corners of the window opening, where the window recess joins the exterior wall.

  • For wood frame construction, measure up and out 2.5 inches from the top corners of the opening; measure down and out 2.5 inches from the bottom corners. Mark the location.  This is a preliminary position for determining the corner anchor position.

For concrete and hollow concrete block construction, measure up and out 2.5 inches from the top corners of the opening; measure down and out 2.5 inches from the bottom corners).

  • For windows with a protruding sill, measure out from the top of the sill.

  • Drill a small pilot hole at these marks (or use an alternate approach) to confirm that you are hitting the desired anchoring substrate within the wall. If successful, this is your corner anchor position. (This step is not required for concrete or hollow concrete block construction.)

If you are not hitting the desired anchoring substrate, you must establish and confirm the proper corner anchor positions.

  • You have now established the location of the 4 corner anchors for the custom window screen (red circles in graphics).

DO NOT DRILL AND INSTALL THE CORNER ANCHORS UNTIL YOU RECEIVE YOUR  CUSTOM SCREEN TO ENSURE THAT THE ANCHORS ARE PRECISELY ALIGNED WITH THE GROMMET POSITIONS ON THE SCREEN.

  • Measure Dimension A and enter it in the measuring worksheet in inches (including fractions of an inch); repeat for Dimension B.  (In the shopping cart, fractions will be entered as decimals.)

(If you drilled a small pilot hole to verify the anchor location, measure from the center of the pilot hole.)

  • The screens are anchored to the structure on two sides of the opening (left and right, or top and bottom).  Select your preference for anchor (grommet) orientation in the measuring worksheet.  For windows with a protruding sill, select left/right grommet orientation.  Window sills are considered exterior veneer and are inappropriate for anchoring.

  • Refer to Grommet Spacing to determine the grommet spacing for your situation.  Enter the grommet spacing in inches.  (If you do not provide the grommet spacing in the on-line shopping cart, spacing will default to 6" (one grommet every 6 inches).

Note:  The finished screen will be approximately 1" larger than your Dimension A and B measurements.
